“CNNIC Releases the 22nd Statistical Report on the Internet Development in China
With the Largest Amount of both Netizens and ccTLDs in the World, a Big Internet Power Is Taking Shape
by the end of June 2008, the amount of netizens in China had reached 253 million, surpassing that in the United States to be the first place in the world. This is according to a newly released Suvery Repot by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).
This report, the 22nd Statistical Report on the Internet Development in China, also indicates the number of broadband users has reached 214 million, which also tops the world. The CNNIC also announced that, by the time of July 22, the number of CN domain names, which was 12.18 million, had exceeded .de, the country-code Top Level Domain for Germany, thus becoming the largest country code Top-Level Domain names in the world. These three major breakthroughs show a big Internet power is taking shape.
A Rising Internet Power
According to CNNIC Report, the scale of Chinese netizens has been displaying the trend of continuous rapid growth. The number of Chinese netizens has increased by 91 million from that in the same period last year. This is the year 2008 that has witnessed the biggest increase in the number of netizens in history, with a growth rate of 56.2%. In the first half of 2008 alone, the net increase of Chinese netizens reached 43 million, outnumbering the US in this regard and rising to the first place in the world in terms of netizen amount.
Statistics show that the number of websites in China is amount to 1.92 million, with an annual increase rate of 46.3%; the number of websites under CN is 1.37 million, accounting for 71.3% in the total amount of websites, which shows that the absolute dominance of CN domain names in China. The domain name demand as a result of this and the demonstration effect of such events as the adoption of beijing2008.cn as the official website of the Beijing Olympics have promoted the realization of leaping development of the CN country code top-level domain name for another time since the breakthrough of 10 million registrations in the beginning of this year. Now CN domain name stands out as the No. 1 ccTLD with a registration of 1.2188 million. Our breakthrough in the Internet scale has become an important footnote to the continuous strengthening of comprehensive national strength in China.
Netizen Structure Has Been Drawing Close to Population Structure
With the gradual expansion of netizen scale, the netizen structure has been gradually drawing close to the structure in the real life. The academic degree structure of netizens in China has been gradually drawing close to the academic degree structure of all the residents, and the trend of Internet popularization has risen. Analyzing the report data from the perspective of academic degrees, we can see that the Internet is displaying a trend of downward proliferation. Netizens with a degree of high school account for the largest proportion, reaching 39%. Meanwhile, the female proportion among Chinese netizens has risen to 46.4%, increasing by 3.6% from that at the end of 2007. Chinese netizens have been tending toward gender equilibrium.
The Internet’s Status As Mainstream Media Is Prominent
Network application has always been an important part in CNNIC Reports. This Report shows that the use rate of network news has reached 81.5%, and the amount of Internet users 206 million. The reading rate of network news has increased by 8.8% from December 2007, rising to the second place in the ranking of network applications, and the absolute dominance of digital entertainment application in the first ten top network application in the past has been changed. This is closely related to the reflections of a series of major news event on the Internet in the first half of this year. The Internet can be said to have become the mainstream media with huge influence and the most development potentiality in the field of mass communication.
The In-depth Internet Application Scale Has Been Sped up
CNNIC Report shows that people’s online behavior has also been drawing close to their real life, with practical applications such as online shopping and online banking becoming popular. Data show that the use rate of online shopping in China is 25%, and the number of users has reached 63.29 million, increasing by 16.88 million in half a year, with Shanghai being the city of the largest penetration rate, that is, 45.2%. Online payment and online banking have been greatly promoting the development of online shopping, and netizens’ use rate of the two methods has reached 22.5% and 23.4% respectively. In particular, the users of online payment in half a year reached 23.79 million, increasing by 71.7% in six months. Influenced by the booming stock market in China in 2007, the use rate of online stock/fund transaction has reached 16.9%. Though the use rate is dropping at present, the total amount of users has still expanded slightly by 4.66 million.
Surfing the Internet with cell phone has become an important development orientation for network applications and will inevitably accelerate the popularization of the Internet. At present, 28.9% of the Chinese netizens accessed the Internet with cell phone in the past half year, and the amount of cell phone netizens has reached 73.05 million.
The series of data released by CNNIC show that China as a big Internet power has taken initial shape, and netizens’ demand for and acceptance of in-depth applications of the Internet have been improved to a large extent. The Internet in China has been gradually maturing and its influence in the future international network community will also be strengthened.”
